In the 1870s the Surgeon General's library occupied space in Ford's theater in Washington, D.C. Beginning in 1872 library officials began seeking legislative funding and approval for a proper building. Concerted efforts during the 1880s won approval for a new building at 7th and Independence, which was occupied in 1887. The Army Medical Library began in 1836 when Surgeon General of the Army Joseph Lovell first established a collection of medical literature for official use. John Shaw Billings, the first Librarian, greatly increased collections and initiated the Index Catalogue. By 1936 the library held more than a million items and was considered one of the premier medical libraries in the world.
